A firm invests money it raised from other people, so it answers to those backers and normally runs a longer diligence process before it commits. Founders often raise from angels first and bring in a firm once there is more to show.

More than the description on its website. The companies a firm has already backed show the stage it really invests at, the kinds of business model it understands, and whether it has funded anything close to what you are building. Read the portfolio before you read the pitch page.

Often, though not far outside. Sector tags describe where a firm concentrates rather than a rule it follows, and companies that sit between two categories get funded all the time. The stronger signal is whether the firm has backed a business with a similar shape, whatever label it carried.

Far more than feels comfortable. Response rates on cold outreach are low even when the fit is good, so a short list of perfect names tends to stall. Build a long list, sort it by how well each firm matches what you are building, and work down it in batches rather than sending everything at once.
