Investor type mostly tells you where the money comes from and how the decision gets made, which in turn shapes cheque size, speed, and how much say they expect afterwards. It is worth matching type to the stage you are at before matching on sector.

Look at what they have already funded rather than what their profile says they like. Stage matters most, then sector, then geography. An investor who has never funded anything at your stage is unlikely to start with you, however well the sector lines up.

Longer than most first-time founders plan for. The work splits into building the list, running outreach, taking meetings, and closing, and each stage can stretch. Start before you need the money, not when the runway is short.

The team and the problem, in that order, before the product. Early on there is rarely enough traction to argue from numbers alone, so the question they are answering is whether these particular people are likely to work this problem out.

Follow up with new information rather than a reminder. A short note saying what changed since you last wrote gives the reader a reason to reply, where "just checking in" gives them none. Two or three of those, spaced out, is normal and expected.
